The short answer
Generative engine optimization is the practice of getting a business named and cited inside AI-generated answers, from assistants like ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot, rather than ranking in a list of links. In practice it is four things: crawler access, answer-shaped content, a clear business entity, and outside corroboration.
The definition
Generative engine optimization, usually shortened to GEO, is the work of making a business the answer that a generative AI system gives when someone asks a buying question in its category.
A generative engine is any system that reads sources and writes a new answer rather than handing back a list. ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and Gemini all qualify. They differ in which index they retrieve from and how they cite, but they reward the same things.
Answer engine optimization, or AEO, describes the same goal. The terms are used interchangeably by most practitioners and there is no meaningful difference in the work.
The four pillars, in the order they pay
Access
The AI crawlers have to be able to fetch your pages and get real content back. This is a configuration question, it is frequently broken by defaults nobody chose, and it blocks everything downstream.
Answers
Pages that state a buyer's question as a heading and answer it immediately underneath, in short factual sentences with real specifics. This is the material that gets quoted.
Entity
One consistent business identity across your site, your schema and every external profile, anchored to a stable identifier so authority accumulates on one thing instead of scattering across many.
Corroboration
Sources you do not own describing your business the way you describe it. Reviews, directories, roundups, coverage. This is what converts a plausible business into a safe one to recommend.
What GEO is not
It is not a keyword exercise. Buyers ask assistants full questions in natural language, and there is no ten-word phrase to stuff.
It is not paid placement. Assistants are beginning to carry sponsored slots, but the recommendation inside the answer is earned.
It is not a one-off audit. Models are retrained, retrieval changes, and competitors publish. Visibility is a position you hold rather than a task you finish.
And it is not separate from your website. A GEO programme that does not change what is on your pages has not started.
How you know it is working
The honest answer is that you have to measure it deliberately, because none of the assistants publish a ranking report.
Pick eight to twelve questions a real buyer would ask. Ask them on a fixed schedule. Record whether your business is named, whether it is cited with a link, and who else appears. Over weeks that turns single readings into a direction, and a direction is what tells you whether the work is landing.
Alongside that, watch referral traffic from assistant domains in your analytics, and watch the crawler hits in your server logs. Crawler activity is the earliest signal of all, because it tells you the door is open before anything else can happen.
