Timelines

How long does it take to show up in AI search?

Two clocks run at once, and they run at very different speeds. Confusing them is why people give up three weeks before it starts working.

The short answer

Live retrieval can name you within weeks of a page being crawled and indexed. Model memory takes months, because it depends on training cycles you do not control. Expect crawler activity in days, first citations in weeks, and consistent presence across many questions in three to six months.

The two clocks

When an assistant answers a question it either recalls what it learned during training, or it runs a live search and reads pages in the moment. These are different mechanisms with different timescales.

Live retrieval is fast. Once a page is crawled and indexed, it becomes eligible immediately. A genuinely good answer page can be cited within weeks of publication, sometimes sooner.

Model memory is slow. Getting into what a model knows without searching requires your content to be present when that model is trained, which happens on a cycle measured in months and is entirely outside your control. This is the durable kind of visibility and it cannot be rushed.

The practical consequence: aim your early work at live retrieval, because that is where the fast feedback is, while knowing the slow clock is running in the background.

A realistic month by month

1

Days one to fourteen

Crawler access is fixed and the first AI crawler hits appear in your server logs. This is the earliest real signal and it confirms the door is open. Nothing user-visible happens yet.

2

Weeks two to six

New answer pages get indexed. Retrieval assistants like Perplexity, which lean hardest on live search, are usually the first to cite you. Expect your first citation on your narrowest, most specific question rather than your most valuable one.

3

Months two to four

Citations spread across more questions as more pages accumulate. Entity work starts to pay, and assistants begin naming you rather than only linking you. Outside mentions earned early start showing up in what the models retrieve.

4

Months four to six and beyond

Consistent presence across most of your buyer questions, and the first signs of recall without a live search. This is the point at which visibility starts defending itself.

What makes it faster or slower

The mistake that wastes the most time

Judging it too early, on the wrong question. People check the biggest, most competitive question in their category during week two, see a competitor, and conclude it does not work.

Measure the narrow questions first, because that is where movement appears first, and measure on a schedule rather than on impulse. A single reading tells you almost nothing. Ten readings over ten weeks tell you whether you are climbing.

How quickly can I appear in ChatGPT?
Live retrieval can surface a new page within weeks of it being crawled and indexed. Being recalled by the model without a live search takes months, because that depends on training cycles.
Why is Perplexity citing me but ChatGPT is not?
Perplexity leans harder on live retrieval, so it reflects new content faster. ChatGPT blends live search with model memory, so it typically lags on newly published pages.
Is AI visibility permanent once I have it?
No. Models are retrained, retrieval changes and competitors publish. It is a position you hold rather than a task you complete, which is why measurement should be a habit.
How often should I publish to make progress?
Consistently rather than heavily. A steady weekly rate of genuinely useful answer pages compounds far better than an occasional burst followed by silence.
What is the first sign it is working?
AI crawler hits in your server logs, returning 200 with real content. That confirms the door is open before any user-visible citation can happen.
